Support us

With no government funding, RYST relies on the generous support of local individuals and organisations. Here’ s how you can help:

1 – Make a donation

Support our Schools and Grants to Individuals programmes by helping us pay for instruction in RYA-approved sailing centres and for bursaries for talented individuals to develop their careers.

We’d love to guarantee provision of sailing lessons from one year to the next across our schools, rather than only committing to one year at a time, and we’d love to take on new schools who would like to join the programme.

This is why annual donations by standing order are so important to us, especially if you use Gift Aid, which adds 25% to your donation at no extra cost to you. Standing orders (or one-off donations) can be set up here. Please give your name and address so we can report back to you each year on the results you’re helping achieve.

2 Shop with easyfundraising

Now that Amazon no longer offers Amazon Smile as a way of supporting charities through everyday shopping, easyfundraising has become the UK’s biggest charity shopping site, raising £50 million for thousands of causes. They partner with over 7,000 brands who will donate part of what you spend to RYST. It won’t cost you any extra. The cost is covered by the brands, who pay a commission when you make a purchase. It’s quick and easy to use and will make a real difference. Sign up free on our easyfundraising page and start shopping.

3 Leave a legacy

The ocean is such an important part of Cornwall’s traditions and culture, yet the poorest children in Cornwall are unable to participate in sailing and other water-based activities, because schools don’t offer sailing as a sport and parents can’t afford to pay for lessons. In fact there are children living a few miles from the sea who have never been to the beach, let alone been sailing, before we introduce them to the water. So teaching children to sail not only gets children out into the fresh air having fun while gaining skills and confidence – it also reconnects them to their Cornish heritage. Lessons cost around £5000 per year for a class of 20 children, so leaving a legacy is one of the most powerful ways you can contribute to our mission. 4 Other ways you can help

(i) Send a young person on the adventure of a lifetime

Every year since 2021, we’ve sent groups of young people aged 16-18 on sea voyages to build skills and confidence at the start of their careers. Each place aboard is sponsored by an individual or organization. Please contact Billy Billington at to find out more.

(ii) Sponsor a project

You could support a school in your area by paying for a year’s worth of lessons (around £5000 for a class of 20 children). Or you could put your name to a specific initiative, such as an Activity Day to get 20 new sailors on the water. Please contact us at to find out more. You can read about projects supported by Cornish Lithium and Cornwall Community Foundation and by Superyacht Charities in the News section on this site.

(ii) Hold a fund-raiser

Bringing people together to raise funds creates a buzz and multiplies the impact of individual donations, for example:

  • Challenges: people have kindly selected us as their nominated charity when taking part in extreme activities, such as crossing the Atlantic
  • Events: giving an event a charity focus creates a purpose beyond simply having fun, making people feel good about participating in it
  • Work: having a staff charity of the year helps foster team-spirit.

You can see examples of fund-raisers in the News section on this site. To discuss nominating RYST as your charity of choice, contact us at

(iv) Donate special things to auction

We’ve been gifted several special items for auction including original paintings, a bespoke Bridget Macklin ceramic and a Ben Ainslie rash vest, all of which have raised significant funds. If you have something of value which you’d like to contribute, we should be delighted to auction it at a VIP fund-raiser on your behalf. Contact us at

(v) Let us sell your unwanted kit

People have given us sailing equipment, including boats, to sell locally to raise funds. If you have a base in Cornwall and want to clear a garage or loft of unwanted sailing equipment – or take an unused boat off the water – we’d be delighted to help. Contact us at
