The weather was miserable, but Team Maybe 2023 happily took to the water for a day of team-building at Polkerris Beach on Wednesday 26 July in preparation for their race to Spain.

The 14 venturers selected for the trip were joined by reservist Daniel Davy for a series of ice-breaking activities aimed at getting to know one another before crewing TS Maybe to A Coruna in the first leg of August’s Tall Ships Races Magellan Elcano 2023.

RYST chairman Dina Wheatcroft was there to observe. She said: “The weather was so bad they had the beach to themselves. They showed they’re proper adventurous, going out on kayaks and paddleboards in tricky conditions and a heavy swell. Very brave.”

After some ice-breaking exercises on the beach, it was everyone into kayaks or onto a giant paddleboard and off towards Gribbin Head to explore some caves.

Lunch was followed by team games on the beach and on paddleboards.

Then the paddleboards were tied in a long line to the pontoon and it was a case of how far you can run along them before – inevitably – falling off.

The weather was dim, but it was clear the young people had a great day. Said Dina: “Thanks to Polkerris Beach instructors Tamer, George, Joe and Jaz, Team Maybe 2023 quickly gelled into an amazing group and you can feel their excitement. They’re so looking forward to the trip.”

Venturer Skye spoke for them all when she said: “The day at Polkerris has been amazing and I have been able to meet so many great people. I cannot wait for the trip and I’m so grateful you have given me this chance. Thank you!”

The project is made possible thanks to the support of local organisations and individuals: our returning sponsors and our new sponsors. A big thank you to them all from the venturers and the Trust.
